  • Introduction

    This module aims at empowering pre-service teachers with competences related to general pedagogy and teaching methodology. It focuses on the practical aspect of key pedagogical concepts, teaching principles, teaching methods, taxonomy of educational objectives, planning for teaching and learning, gender responsive and inclusive pedagogy, and assessment within the competence-based curriculum approach. In this module, students will be also exposed to the school life experience.   

    Module Learning Outcomes

    By the end of this module, you should be able to:

    1.Categorize first-year university student-teachers’ perceptions of the teaching profession to reflect on their impact on your future teaching roles and practices,
    2.Apply key pedagogical concepts, learning theories, teaching -learning principles, methods, and techniques in diverse teaching and learning situations to enhance student engagement and achievement,
    3.Differentiate various approaches to learning to better align instruction with student needs, ensuring a more inclusive and motivating learning environment,
    4.Use taxonomies of educational objectives in the lessons planning, delivery and assessment; describe the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Rwanda and ensureing inclusive and gender-responsive teaching and learning practices to foster equitable learning opportunities for all students.

    This unit explores first year student teachers’ perceptions of the teaching profession in the context of Rwanda. There is evidence that in most developing countries, teacher preparation at tertiary level combines candidates with professional preparation from high school and those without such experience. These students enter the programme with different preconceptions about and perceptions of the teaching profession .

    Unit 3 explores various learning theories and their application in the teaching/learning process.  Theories of learning are frameworks that explain how individuals acquire, process, and retain knowledge and skills. There are many theories of learning, but this unit focuses on the six theories including behaviorism with emphasis on classical conditioning and operant conditioning, cognitivism, constructivism, socio-constructivism, socio-cultural  theory and social learning theory

    Curriculum is the vehicle through which a country empowers its citizens with the necessary knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that enable them to be empowered for personal and national development. Therefore, it should meet the needs of the individual citizens and the nation. This unit explores the meaning of CBC, and its history. It particulary discusses the CBC in Rwanda with a focus on its rationale, generic competences, crosscutting issues and competence- based assessments  as well as  opportunities, challenges and mitigation strategies of CBC implementation in Rwanda.
