Dear Student,
Welcome to this “Qualitative and Mixed Research Methods (QMM)” unit of the module named Applied Research Methods.
The course is aiming at providing the students enrolled in Epidemiology and MPH programs with a practical knowledge and skills related to qualitative and mixed research methods. The course will cover topics including proposal writing, field work, analysis and reporting as well as disemination of qualtitative and mixed research findings.
You are expected to participate to the entire course, including the scheduled group or individual course assignments and discussions using the designed forum. If necessary, do not hesitate to contact the course instructor for further information.
We look forward to seeing you at the course start!

Introduction
Qualitative research shares some similarities with quantitave research. However, qualitative research has unique procedures, techniques and outcomes that make its methods different from quantitative research. This session covers important topics that will respond to the following questions: What is qualitative research? Who is involved in qualitative reseach? What are qualitative reseach characteristics? What are differences between quantitative and qualitative research approaches?
Moreover, this session details how to design qualitative research, sampling techniques and ethical considerations for qualitative research.
LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE SESSION
By the end of this session, you should be able to:
- Determine concepts used in qualitative research
- Compare qualitative and quantitative research
- Design a qualitative study
- Apply appropriate sampling techniques for qualitative research
- Reflect ethics principles for qualitative research
-
In groups (number of groups and group members to be determined),
Work on a qualitative research protocol: write problem statement, research question, qualitative objectives, identify participants and design a short interview guide )
-
-
Introduction
Qualitative research data collection uses specific data collection techniques. This session covers three commonly used qualitative data collection techniques: Observation, in-depth interview and focus group discussion.
LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE SESSION
By the end of this session, you should be able to:
LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE SESSION
- Apply observation as a qualitative data collection technique
- Conduct in-depth interview
- Facilitate a focus group discussion
- Take notes from each covered data collection technique
- Elucidate strengths and weaknesses of each covered data collection technique
-
In your respective groups, answer all provided questions
Q1: Discuss challenges described in the reading and propose solutions to overcome those challenges
Q2: How are virtues of qualitative research will be considered for your group work?
Q3: Discuss common problems associated with qualitative research question and share your group experience with research question formulation
Then, preprare a 10 minutes presentation about how these challenge may apply to your group qualitative study

Introduction
This session explains reasons behind the use of theories and paradigmes in qualitative research. In addition, there are may traditions that are used in qualitative research. This session gives details about important traditions (study designs/approaches) that are used in qualitative research.
LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE SESSION
- Determine the reasons behind the use of theories and paradigms in qualitative research
- Apply appropriate theory while conducting a qualitative research
- Differentiate traditions according to their respective foci
- Use an appropriate tradition for a specific qualitative study
-
In your respective groups, work on the protocol methods section: write a consent form, revise the participant selection and the guide and describe data collection procedures and the tradition to be used for your specific research.

SESSION 4: INTRODUCTION TO MIXED RESEARCH METHODS, QUALITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS, REPORTING AND TRUSTWORTHINESS OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
Introduction
This session gives a simple introduction to mixed research methods. It explains how to perform qualitative analysis, describes qualitative reporting issues and discuss strategies aiming at achieving rigor in qualitative research.
By the end of this session, you should be able to:
LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE SESSION
- Describe reasons why mixed research methods can be used
- Analyze qualitative data
- Report qualitative finding scientifically
- Apply strategies for achieving rigor in Qualitative research
-
In your respective groups, read and discuss the content of the above-named article and come up with a presentation detailing your recommendations to make qualitative research trustworthy.

Introduction
This session is to be through the discussion forum. It consists of discussion regarding the whole course. The discussion will involve students and instructures. Responses to asked questions may come from instructors as well as students.
During this session instructors and students will also discuss logistics of each group field work related to this course practice and final paper to be submitted.
At the end of this course, each student should be able to:
- Define concepts used in qualitative research
- Compare qualitative and quantitative research
- Design a qualitative study
- Understand the most common qualitative research/data collection methods
- Collect and analyze qualitative data
- Write a qualitative scientific paper
Understand mixed-method research design
-
Group assignments (fieldwork and final paper writing)
This is a face to face session.
On the day of this session (date to be determined), students will submit the final paper & power point presentation
