Dr George Lundberg, Editor Chief of MedGenMed highlighted that the main purpose of a medical journal are to shed light, to take heat and to give heat. Although writing is hard work but Francis Bacon once said that writing makes you an exact man. This article highlights also essential questions one should ask themselves before writing a paper and a set steps peer reviews use when analyzing a paper for publication. At the end, Dr George provided basic helpful writing instructions “Paper writing 101” written by Dr Bill Teney of Indiana University.

 

How to write a scientific manuscript for publication:

 

This paper’s talks about how the scientific manuscript are important because they disseminate relevant information and research findings. It also highlights main components of a scientific manuscript.

When writing a manuscript for publication, one should first start with i) a title which should reflect the essence of the article, its novelty and relevance to the biomedical field. It should also be clear, brief, specific and not include jargon ii) keywords and iii) abstract which is the most important part of the paper because it’s the first thing the readers read and from there, they decide whether to continue reading or not. It should be easy to understand and informative but not too detailed. The next step is the introduction which introduces the readers to the topic in a straightforward way. The next step after introduction is the materials and methods. This is a very important section of a scientific manuscript as it aims to provide the readers the necessary details to replicate the study. Therefore, the methods should be clearly presented.

The next step will be discussing the results which consist of the organized presentation of the collected data. All materials and methods talked about in the materials and methods section should be mentioned and usage of proper words when describing relationship between variables. After the results, the next step is to explain the meaning of the results the results in the discussion section. The next step is the conclusion which should include a take home message. Later include the acknowledgement and references.

This paper focused on the fact that its important to publish in order to get new jobs. It also highlighted that publishing research papers is very important because without them scientists cannot get money from government and universities.

  1. Introduction: This section is very important because it is supposed to introduce the readers to the subject, and it must be easily understood mostly for those who hasn’t done any work in the field. This section’s real importance is to cite your work, or any other person’s as long your name appears on it. The scientific research, scientific writing and scientific publication and conclusions sections will provide much detailed information on writing research paper.
  2. Scientific research: It is very important to secure grants in order to do a research. You may need to first convincethe grant agency that you are the best person for the research and after securing it, it’s possible to find out that the project will not be as simple as you thought but the purpose is to publish therefore you have to push hard.
  3. Scientific writing: Here even if you find that you have spent much time on a project which you can’t solve, you have to find a way to solve it and present it to the scientific comment who will provide both negative and positive feedbacks. You must be ready for them. And one key thing to remember is that, you can’t stay in science if you don’t publish enough.
  4. Scientific publishing: Once you have finished writing a paper, make sure to check for any errors before publication. Otherwise you will need to write an erratum explain why and how you did the errors.
  5. Conclusions: This section was highlighted as the easiest to write because you will only need to change the past tense to present of an abstract.
