MAT2141: Statistics and Probability (DTP)
Sciences
Statistics is a science that deals with collecting, organising, summarising, presenting, analysing data. Statistics can be divided into two branches: Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics.
- Descriptive statistics consists of techniques involving collecting, tabulating, presenting and summarising information in clear and the effective ways in order to describe the set of data.
- Inferential statistics involves the techniques of analysing sample results to draw conclusion about the population.
In this module we will loak the descriptive statistics, the counting techniques, the concepts of sample space, events, the probability of an event, and the axioms of probability. We will also look at the concepts of random variables and we will give some examples of discrete and continuous random variables.
