BIO2141: Genetics and Evolution
Trimester 1

This module aims to equip students with basic skills related to Genetics and Evolution.

Humans have always been  interested in heredity. For a long time, they have been astonished by the fact that the descendants of a given living being resemble to its parents for many of its characteristics.  Up to the middle of 19th century, less progress has been made in the understanding of heredity mechanisms.

The basics for understanding the mechanisms of inheriting the hereditary characters from one organism to its descendants were the results from Gregor Johann Mendel’s (1822-1884) experiments.

They established the first bases for a revolution in Biology and which gave rise to a new discipline:  Genetics.

Mendel, through the laws which he formulated proved that the inherited characters are determined by distinct factors which are transmitted from one generation to another and distributed separately to each generation.
