MSN6142: Early Childhoold Special Educational Needs
Semester 1

This module basically aims to provide students with knowledge on how children typically develop from conception to 8 years.  It describes patterns of human development during pre-natal and post- natal stages. This module provides students with   better understanding of developmental characteristics of learners at different stages. This knowledge can be utilised by the teacher to provide age-appropriate instruction to learners and to shape their behaviour accordingly. Crucial information on infancy and its related problems of which teachers should be knowledgeable in order to teach infants effectively is provided in this module. This course will focus on Early Cildhood Special Educational Needs, which would concentrate on ‘at-risk’ children, or young children with special needs (0-8 years) and their education. The content will skew towards understanding special needs in early years, characteristics of young children with special needs, early identification and early intervention, screening, and assessment as well as early stimulation. Emphasis should be on impact of special needs on growth, development and learning, as well as signs or differences in abilities.
