GE90242: Urbanization and Sustainable Cities
Semester 2

The module GE90142: Urbanisation and Sustainable Urban Development provides Master of Geography and Environment students with advanced knowledge and analytical skills for understanding urbanisation processes, urban systems, and sustainable urban development in diverse global contexts. It examines the evolution, drivers, and theories of urban growth, alongside socio-economic and environmental challenges such as housing, inequality, pollution, climate change, and urban resilience.

The module also focuses on sustainable urban planning, governance, infrastructure, and emerging urban innovations such as smart and learning cities, while addressing future challenges including megacity sustainability and rapid urbanisation in the Global South. Through case studies and applied learning, students are equipped to critically analyse urban systems and contribute to the development of sustainable, inclusive, and resilient cities.
