Life originated on earth some billions ago. The emergence of life was made possible by the formation of cell. The latter is thus considered as the structural and functional unit of life. The first living organisms were unicellular,i.e, made of one cell.Today, such living organisms include bacteria and protists. Unicellular organisms cannot be seen with our naked eyes, we therefore need to use magnifying instruments such as microscopes. Most of the organism we are aware of are multicellular,i.e. made of many cells. Such organisms have complex structures made of cells, tissues, organs and organs systems for life support and maintenance.
This module covers all aspects related to cell structure and function. Major topics include theories on origin of life, cell types, tools used in cell study, cell ultrastructure, cell respiration, cell division and cell communication
