1. Purpose of the Unit
The aim of this unit is to provide you with basic understanding of concepts, theories, principles, functions and practices relevant to human resource management in organization.

This unit is designed to cover:
1. Scope and features of Human Resource Management
2. Role, qualities and functions of Human Resource Management
3. Environmental factors of Human Resource Management
3. Unit Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit, you will be able to:
- Describe the scope and features of Human Resource Management
- Discuss the role, qualities and functions of Human Resource Management
- Explain the environmental factors impacting Human Resource Management
4. Time duration
The time to be allocated to this unit is distributed as follows:
- 3hrs of reading of materials;
- 1hr 30 of attempting E-tivity 1.1.;
- 1hr of attempting E-tivity 1.2;
- 30 min of attempting E-tivity 1.3; and
- 2hrs of face to face under the guidance of a facilitator

- Principles of Management for Leadership Communication Section 9.1 from page 585 to 590 and Section 9.3 from page 595 to 599.
Attempt the following activities:
1. Discuss the difference between Human Resources Management and Strategic Human Resources Management
2. After reading Chapter 1: The Role of Human Resources from the book entitled Human Resources Management,
- Define and discuss major HRM activities.
- Identify the Characteristics of HRM
3. Post your answers to the above questions in the discussion forum of this e-tivity. /5 marks
4. Comment on the answers of at least 2 classmates with relevant feedback. /5 marks
