This is a very practical module, run in a newsroom set up. It will open with a recap of the basics covered under the news writing and reporting module, after which students will get into a practicum workshop involving several practical exercises, with a final tangible output(s) expected at the end of the module. Each workshop will begin with a light brief on a certain journalistic skill employed in a specialized project. This may include but not limited interviewing – for example an interview on a new environmental policy; interviews and filming a science lab, dealing with patients in terms of ethics, etc. After the few minutes then students working in their teams, will discuss and develop their pitches with the instructor’s guidelines. These will include interactive lectures, practical - Individual and group exercises, review and critique of stories on special topics (using newspapers/magazines, documentaries, etc), class presentations, Guest Speakers, research and report assignments; and reporting and writing project (field work).
The module aims at providing students with a deep insight into the role of information and communication in development and how the different development theories have influenced the development communication strategies used in Third world countries, particularly highlighting the role of community radio. Students are introduced to the concepts of sustainable equitable development, environment management, Land’s carrying capacity, information dualism and poverty, impact of climate change, gender aspects of development, etc.
The module seeks to provide students with a platform to put into practice what they have learnt in class theoretically. The module simulates a work environment that students will be working under in Public Relations, advertising or other communications practice. The module is a practical one and will use the experiential learning approach, where students will use skills acquired during training to design and develop PR and communication strategies, PR and communication campaigns, as well as communication support materials.
