MEE4262 Occupational Safety and and Risk Engineering
Semester II

This course introduces the fundamental principles of occupational safety and risk engineering, focusing on the identification, assessment, and control of workplace hazards in engineering and industrial environments. It covers occupational safety legislation, hazard identification, risk assessment methodologies, industrial safety practices, occupational health, ergonomics, machine and process safety, fire and electrical safety, and engineering risk analysis techniques. The course also addresses accident investigation, emergency preparedness, safety audits, and continuous improvement of safety management systems. Through lectures, case studies, practical exercises, and risk assessment projects, students develop the knowledge and skills required to design, implement, and evaluate effective safety and risk management strategies that promote safe, healthy, and sustainable engineering workplaces.

 
 
 
 
 
ENE4263 NUCLEAR ENERGY 2025-2026
Semester II

The main aim of this course is to provide the fundamentals and basic characteristics of nuclear technology. Specifically, it is sought that students understand the principles of nuclear energy and its applications in nuclear facilities, covering the different stages from fuel manufacturing to dismantling of nuclear power plants.

Indicative content

Introduction: History of nuclear energy and its contribution to the electric generation in the world; Nuclear physics and radioactivity; Reactor thermo hydraulics; Socioeconomics and environmental aspects.

Thermodynamic cycles and components of nuclear power plants: Thermodynamic cycles; Reactor, turbines, humidity separators, condenser, pumps, heat exchangers, etc.

Nuclear fuel cycles and security: Production and cycle of nuclear fuel; Security systems of nuclear power plants; Nuclear regulators.

Radiologic protection and waste management: Ionizing radiations and measurement systems; Equipment and systems for radiologic protection; Classification and management of radioactive wastes; Dismantling of nuclear power plants.

Other developments: Future developments of nuclear power plants.
