Department of Mathematics

The mission of the Mathematics Department is to provide a supportive and stimulating environment in which students can acquire a strong foundation in mathematics and develop competence in its applications. The department is committed to nurturing critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving skills, enabling students to become lifelong learners, advance in their chosen professions, and contribute meaningfully to society.

This mission is achieved through well-structured undergraduate and postgraduate academic programs. At the undergraduate level, the department offers comprehensive programs over a four-year period with two main options: Applied Mathematics and Statistics, which form the core of its academic offerings. At the postgraduate level, the department provides advanced training through Master’s and PhD programs, aimed at deepening mathematical knowledge, fostering research, and developing high-level expertise in specialized areas of mathematics and its applications.

In addition, the department plays a vital service role across the University of Rwanda by delivering essential mathematics and applied mathematics modules to students in various colleges. Mathematics is a fundamental tool underpinning all scientific and technological disciplines, making its teaching indispensable across fields of study.

In pursuing this mission, the department focuses on the development, dissemination, and application of mathematical knowledge in key areas, including pure and applied mathematics, statistics, mathematics education, and actuarial science. It serves a diverse student body, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, majors, minors, general education students, and learners from other academic disciplines.
