The mission of the Mathematics Department is to provide a supportive and stimulating learning environment for undergraduate students, enabling them to acquire a strong foundation in mathematics and develop competence in its applications. The department is committed to nurturing critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving skills, preparing students to become lifelong learners, pursue advanced studies, and succeed in their professional careers while contributing meaningfully to society.
This mission is implemented through well-structured undergraduate academic programs delivered over a four-year period, with two main specializations: Applied Mathematics and Statistics. These programs constitute the core of the department’s undergraduate offerings and are designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills relevant to modern scientific and technological challenges.
In addition, the department provides essential mathematics courses to students across various colleges of the University of Rwanda, recognizing mathematics as a foundational discipline that supports learning and innovation in science, engineering, economics, and other fields.
In fulfilling its mission, the department emphasizes the development, teaching, and application of mathematical knowledge in areas such as applied mathematics, statistics, mathematics education, and related fields. It serves a diverse undergraduate population, including majors, minors, and students from other disciplines who require mathematical competence as part of their academic training.
