This module examines how sports injuries occur and what makes athletes vulnerable to them. It begins by establishing how sports injuries are defined and classified, by mode of onset (acute and overuse), by the tissue affected and by the body system involved. Building on this foundation, the module explores the mechanisms through which injuries happen and the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that increase injury risk. Attention is also given to how injury patterns and risks vary across athlete groups, including youth, older adults, women athletes and para-athletes. The module prepares health professionals to recognise, describe and anticipate sports injuries, and to apply this understanding to supporting athletes’ health and safe participation in sport.
