Unit description:
This unit is intended for students and health professionals interested in health management and planning. Its content introduces you to the approaches and methods used at the various stages of the planning process. It therefore constitutes excellent reference documentation and a valuable basic tool for the planner.
Unit objectives /aims: to give insight in different aspects of development of health plans, and to identify challenges and opportunities in planning for health.

Knowledge and understanding
- to describe major concepts, methods, strategies and frameworks for planning in healthcare.
Skills and abilities
- to independently elaborate a strategic and operational plan for health
Judgement and approach
- to critically make assessments of health planning process
- to demonstrate insight into the potentials and limitations when planning for health, the role of planning in the society and in organizations, and the significance of people’s responsibility for their own health on the planning process.Unit topics: the unit consists of 6 following sessions: health planning-perspectives and general approach; determination of needs; determination of priorities; development of the program; implementation planning; monitoring and evaluation.
Teaching methods: a mix of interactive lectures, group-work and individual assignments. The combination of face to face and web-based learning and interaction will be used. Major parts of the course will be allocated to an individual work assignment.
Assessment: one individual assignment (elaboration of institutional operational plan) and a module exam. The students ‘assessment and unit evaluation will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines established by the UR.
