Introduction
Welcome to this section for the unit called hematology and cytology which is one of the three units under Veterinary Clinical pathology and Toxicolgy. It is course unit offered to undergraduate students so that they can understand the concepts about blood components in the normal and abnormal condition in animals, blood collection procedures, blood analysis methods and also concepts of cytology and how cytological samples like body exudates as well as various organ biopsies e.g. lymph nodes, liver, swellings etc are collected and analyzed.
Hematology refers to the study of the numbers and morphology of the cellular elements of the blood—the RBCs (erythrocytes), WBCs (leukocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes)—and the use of these results in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease
Learning outcomes
At the end of this unit, you will be able :
- To identify the different blood cell of animals during normal and abnormal conditions
- To understand different cytological processes
- To collect and process blood samples for the diagnosis of animal diseases
- To accurately interpret laboratory findings from blood and cytology samples, diagnose, and prescribe appropriate therapy based on laboratory findings

This book helps students to understand clinical pathology. It includes all the techniques used to analyse normal and abnormal parameters of blood and other body fluids. It helps students to know how to handle sample collected from the animals and how to differentiate between the normal from abnormal so that they can accurately interpret the laboratory findings.
