  • Welcome to the module of Veterinary Clinical Pathology and Toxicology (VET4222)

    This module to taught to 4th year veterinary medicine students and it aims at developing theoretical and practical understanding of veterinary clinical pathology and toxicology to students. The module has three Units : Hematology and cytology, Clinical biochemistry and toxicology

    Brief description and Aim

    The module aims at developing theoretical and practical understanding of veterinary clinical pathology and toxicology. Students will be taken through theoretical and practical concepts of veterinary clinical pathology and toxicology. By the end of the course, students should have gained knowledge of how clinical pathology is applied to aid in making confirmatory diagnosis of various diseases of veterinary importance as well as how the subject can be applied in instituting therapy and monitoring of therapy response. The subject will mainly cover appropriate means of collecting and processing samples for laboratory diagnosis specifically for blood, urine, fecal, skin, body exudates as well as various organ biopsies e.g. lymph nodes, liver, swellings etc. It will also cover the concepts of veterinary toxicology as well as the clinical approach of diagnosis and treatment of intoxications in domestic animals.

    Learning outcomes

    By the end of this module students will: 

    • Be able to understand the concepts of clinical pathology and its importance in veterinary medicine
    • Be able to  identify and collect samples required for the diagnosis of animal diseases   
    • Be able to accurately interpret laboratory findings, give the right diagnosis, and prescribe appropriate therapy based on laboratory findings
    • Be able to understand the general concepts of veterinary toxicology
