Medical Imaging Practice II
Semester 1

This module is designed to introduce the learner to trauma radiography and specialized radiography categories that include paediatric radiography, dental radiography, mammography, mobile & trauma radiography, High KV techniques and foreign body radiography.

Indicative content:

Unit I: Dental radiography

  • Key Terms including planes, and the dental formula.
  • Different sizes and types of dental x-ray film.
  • Safety precautions needed when using radiation.
  • Types of intra-oral dental radiographs.
  • Difference between bisecting and paralleling techniques.
  • The most common radiographic errors.
  •  Infection control during radiography procedures.

Unit II:  Mammography

  • Basic principles of mammography imaging to include:
  • Facility preparation/equipment manipulation
  • Patient preparation/communication/professionalism
  • Positioning of patient
  • Safety and Radiation protection
  • Technical details/Critical Thinking

Unit III: Pediatric Radiography

·         •Identify the basic principles of pediatric and geriatric imaging

·         •Facility preparation/equipment manipulation

·         •Patient preparation/communication/professionalism

·         •Positioning of patient

·         •Safety and Radiation protection

·         •Technical details/Critical Thinking

 

Unit IV:  Mobile/ Trauma/ Ward radiography

·         •Identify the basic principles of surgical and mobile radiography

·         •Sterile technique in the operating room R

·         •Operating room personnel/Surgical Team

·         •Operating room and Bedside procedures

·         •Isolation/standard precautions

·         •Safety and Radiation protection

·         •Patient preparation and positioning

·         •Technical considerations/Critical Thinking

 

Unit V: Foreign body localization

·         Different types of foreign bodies

·          Factor to consider when radiographing foreign bodies

·          Factors to consider when determining foreign body locations

·          Steps in radiographic localization of a foreign body

·          Corrections to be made when the foreign body is not radiographically localized

 

Unit VI: High kilovoltage technique

  •  High kV imaging
  •  Body areas where it is used
  • Advantages of high kV technique
  • Disadvantages of the high kV technique

 

 Allocation of Units

There are 20 sessions in the 2nd semester for MIP II
